MDR TB is harder to treat than regular TB, so there is more concern with MDR TB. It's resistant to the normal antibiotics that are used for TB. If someone doesn't take the medicine as intended, when they have TB, it could turn into MDR TB. MDR TB has a higher mortality rate. This is also anther reason for more concern with MDR TB.
I think after listening to this podcast, i have a more concern about MDR TB than before because it wasn't something I thought was a problem here in the United States. Although, my concern still isn't very high. The screening process for refugees is changing. There is a more in depth screening for TB and if they can find out if these people have TB before entering the U.S., it is more comforting.
The fact that some people are monitered while they are on the TB antbiotics to make sure they are taking the medicine as directed, shows that maybe this can be done with other diseases illnesses. Even though it is expensive, it can help eliminate many other diseases and illnesses.
